Chionochloa rubra (Red Tussock)

  • Red Tussock typically reaches heights of about 1.5 meters but can grow taller in favourable conditions. From February to April, it produces attractive seed heads. Thriving in damp and infertile soils, this resilient grass shines in cooler climates.

Poa cita (Silver Tussock)

  • Rapid growing tussock with feathery flower heads in summer. Ideal for mass plantings, it thrives particularly well in dry, exposed sites and can adapt to poor soils with ease. Very hardy.

Austroderia richardii (South Island Toe Toe)

  • A large, fast-growing coarse green tussock. Versatile revegetation and erosion-control plant, and useful low shelter on wet and dry sites. Attractive creamy white flower heads to 2-3m from December-January. Great under pivot irrigation. Hardy.

Carex secta (Purei / Makura Sedge)

  • Vigorous, fast-growing green sedge common along streams and in wetlands. Its extensive root system makes it an excellent choice for erosion control. Hardy; thrives in wet soils.

Carex virgata (Swamp Sedge)

  • A vigorous sedge suitable for swamps, drain margins, seepages and wet pastures. A successful colonising plant, used for wetland planting and revegetation. Suitable for conditions which may vary periodically from very wet to very dry. More dry tolerant and shorter than C. secta. Hardy.
