Sophora microphylla (South Island Kowhai)

  • This particular Kōwhai has very small leaves (microphylla) and a tangled juvenile form, tending to straighten up and grow from an upright trunk at about four years. Kōwhai makes a good garden tree and is necessary for revegetation projects as a bird attractor. Kōwhai are suited to upper bank plantings of riparian areas. They also make beautiful shade or specimen trees. Semi-deciduous. Hardy. 5-7m in height when Mature.

Olearia lineata (Twiggy Tree Daisy)

  • Small tree with plume like branches and fine leaves. Trims well for fast hedging and shelter. Fragrant white flowers. Very Hardy. 5m in height when mature.

Kunzea ericoides (Kanuka)

  • A slender fast growing scrubby tree that thrives in hard conditions. Masses of small white flowers appear from September to February. Prefers free draining soil. Mature Height 4-5m.

Cordyline australis (Cabbage Tree)

  • Very distinctive strap like leaves, upright in the centre and drooping on the outside. Very hardy native tree suitable for most conditions.  Tolerant of wind, full sun and drought, wet/swampy conditions. Lovely fragranced flowers in early Summer. Grows to 3-5m in height.

Olearia dartonii (Twiggy Tree Daisy)

  • Narrow needle-like foliage and is tough enough in dry conditions to withstand even the longest drought. Also at home in damp or water logged soil, making this a truly versatile shrub.  It is also very cold tolerant. The tree produces an abundance of flowers which have a subtle vanilla scent. Easy to trim for hedging or shelter. Leave untrimmed for shrub 3-8m tall.
